Cyclist accidents hit four-year peak as road safety deteriorates

Bicycle-related accidents have surged to their highest level since 2021, with authorities recording more than 770 cases throughout 2025. The sharp increase signals growing concerns about road safety and compliance among cyclists across the region.

Analysis of the accident data reveals that inattention and disorderly cycling practices were responsible for more than half of all incidents. Cyclists' failure to maintain proper lookout while riding, combined with erratic behaviour on roads, emerged as the primary contributing factors to the rise in accidents.

The surge reflects broader challenges in road safety as urban cycling becomes increasingly prevalent. Experts attribute the trend partly to the growing number of cyclists on roads, coupled with insufficient awareness among riders about traffic regulations and safe riding practices.

The data underscores the need for enhanced road safety measures targeting cyclists, including improved infrastructure, public education campaigns, and stricter enforcement of cycling regulations. Authorities have indicated that both cyclist behaviour and driver awareness will need to improve to reverse the upward trend in accidents.
