Cyclone Arnab batters Visakhapatnam; city grinds to halt amid deluge

Visakhapatnam came to a virtual standstill on Tuesday as Cyclone Arnab unleashed intense rainfall across the coastal city, prompting emergency response from civic and disaster management agencies. The Visakhapatnam district recorded 147.9 mm of precipitation between 8:30 a.m. and 9 p.m., disrupting transport, utilities and daily commerce.

Transport services bore the brunt of the weather disruption, with city bus operators cancelling scheduled services to ensure public safety. The city's beaches have been declared off-limits to the public, while authorities advised residents to remain indoors. Multiple uprooted trees blocked key thoroughfares, hampering vehicular movement and rescue operations.

Power supply interruptions compounded the difficulties faced by residents and businesses across the district. Civic agencies, including municipal corporations and electricity boards, have been mobilized to clear debris and restore essential services. Waterlogged streets and submerged low-lying areas forced the closure of several commercial establishments and educational institutions.

Authorities have placed emergency response teams on high alert as the cyclone continues to batter the region. The India Meteorological Department has urged residents to exercise caution and remain updated with official weather bulletins as Cyclone Arnab moves through the coastal zone.
