Cyclone Arnab weakens; gusty winds expected across island

The very severe cyclonic storm Arnab, which had been positioned over the west-central Bay of Bengal, is currently making landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coastline in India. As the weather system moves inland, its influence on Sri Lanka's meteorological conditions has progressively weakened, according to meteorological observations.

Several provinces across the island are expected to experience the residual effects of the cyclone. Wind speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour are anticipated in multiple areas, with Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces likely to experience intermittent showers during the period.

While Arnab's direct impact on Sri Lanka continues to diminish, residents in affected areas should remain alert to weather advisories. The meteorological department is monitoring the system's progression and is expected to provide updated forecasts as conditions evolve.

The cyclone season in the Indian Ocean region typically brings weather disturbances to South Asia. Sri Lanka's geographical position means the island can experience peripheral effects from major cyclonic systems developing in the Bay of Bengal, though direct impacts remain relatively limited.
