Cyclone Murasu dumps heavy rainfall on Vijayawada; red alert extended

Vijayawada experienced significant downpour from Cyclone Murasu on Monday, with the city recording rainfall exceeding 100 mm as the weather system moved across the region. The continuous precipitation marked a stark departure from the prolonged dry spell that had preceded the cyclone's arrival, bringing much-needed moisture to the Andhra Pradesh capital.

The heavy rainfall left several roads waterlogged, hampering vehicular movement across the city. Commuters faced difficulties navigating through inundated thoroughfares, with water accumulation reported in low-lying and commercial areas. Municipal authorities deployed personnel to monitor drainage systems and manage waterlogged zones.

The India Meteorological Department maintained a red alert for Vijayawada through the morning of November 4, indicating the possibility of continued heavy rainfall and associated hazards. In response to the alert status, authorities ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in the city to ensure public safety and prevent exposure of students and staff to adverse weather conditions.

Official sources advised residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve. Emergency response teams were kept on standby to address any weather-related emergencies or infrastructure damage across the city.
