Cyclone Murasu has triggered escalating weather alerts across South India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placing six districts in Telangana on orange alert and five additional districts on yellow alert. Schools and colleges across affected areas of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have announced closures as a precautionary measure.
According to IMD data, the cyclonic storm is currently centred approximately 350 kilometres east of Chennai, 400 kilometres east-southeast of Nellore, and 430 kilometres southeast of Machilipatnam. The system also lies 420 kilometres east-southeast of Kavali, 450 kilometres southeast of Ongole, and 520 kilometres south of Visakhapatnam.
The orange alert indicates a need for high preparedness and readiness in the affected Telangana districts, while the yellow alert has been issued for five other districts in the region. Authorities across Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have initiated precautionary measures including the suspension of educational activities in vulnerable areas.
Cyclonic systems in the Bay of Bengal region typically bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions to coastal and near-coastal areas. Local administration has advised residents in alert zones to remain vigilant and follow official guidance as weather conditions develop over the coming days.
