Cyclone Murasu weakens after coastal crossing; Chennai flights grounded

The severe cyclonic storm Murasu made landfall and has begun its northwestward trajectory across the region, bringing disruptive weather to coastal and interior areas. The Tamil Nadu hill district of Nilgiris remains under alert as the system is expected to bring significant rainfall over the coming hours.

Wind speeds associated with the cyclone are anticipated to decrease to 80-90 kmph by Tuesday afternoon as the system moves inland and weakens. The gradual diminishing of the storm's intensity is expected to continue as it moves away from coastal zones.

The impact on transportation has been immediate, with at least 11 flights from Chennai cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Flight operations at the city's airport are expected to remain disrupted until conditions improve. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain indoors and avoid travel until the weather system passes through the region.

Meteorological departments continue to monitor the system's movement and have issued updated advisories for districts in the expected path of the cyclone. Disaster management teams have been placed on standby across affected areas to respond to any emergencies.
