Cyclone Murasu weakens to depression; coastal Andhra Pradesh battered by heavy rains

The remnants of Cyclone Murasu continued to unleash heavy downpours across coastal Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, even as the system weakened into a depression over the Bay of Bengal. The intensity of rainfall was particularly pronounced in Palnadu district, where Edlapadu village recorded 269.45 mm of precipitation in a 24-hour period—the highest measurement registered across the state during the current spell.

Meteorological officials indicated that the depression was gradually losing its organized structure as it moved inland, though moisture-laden winds continued to feed moisture to the coastal regions. Several other districts in coastal Andhra Pradesh reported substantial rainfall, contributing to widespread waterlogging and disruptions to normal life. Authorities issued advisories for residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant for potential flooding.

The Indian Meteorological Department said the weather system was expected to weaken further over the coming days, with rainfall intensity likely to diminish. However, coastal and adjoining districts were braced for continued precipitation as the depression moved through the region. Relief and rescue operations remained on standby in vulnerable areas as authorities monitored the situation.
