Cyclone threat looms as heavy rain batters southern Indian states

The India Meteorological Department issued a fresh alert on Sunday as a depression centred over the Southeast Bay of Bengal moved in a west-northwesterly direction, raising concerns of another cyclonic storm forming over the coming days.

Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall until November 3, with the weather office advising residents and authorities to remain on high alert. Coastal districts in both states face particular risk from the developing weather system.

The movement of the depression westward has triggered warnings across meteorological offices monitoring the region. While the immediate threat remains confined to heavy precipitation, officials cautioned that the atmospheric conditions could develop into a more severe cyclonic circulation.

District administrations have been placed on standby to respond to potential flooding and water-logging in low-lying areas. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the Bay of Bengal, and maritime authorities have issued navigational warnings for vessels in the region.

The monsoon season's tail end continues to bring instability to the Bay of Bengal, with multiple weather systems likely to impact southern India in the coming weeks, forecasters said.
