Cyclones turn Andhra Pradesh drought into disaster, claiming lives and crops

Andhra Pradesh has endured a sharp reversal in monsoon fortunes as back-to-back cyclones swept through the state, transforming drought conditions into widespread destruction. The successive weather systems have claimed at least 17 lives while causing significant material damage estimated at ₹6,500 crore.

The agricultural sector bore the brunt of the cyclonic systems. Extensive crop damage has been reported across multiple districts, with coconut plantations particularly hard hit as strong winds uprooted trees across affected areas. The Godavari belt, a historically productive agricultural region, has been among the most severely impacted zones.

Farmers in the region now face a protracted recovery process, with agricultural experts indicating that normalcy may not return for at least two years. The cyclones have destroyed standing crops, damaged irrigation infrastructure, and depleted soil quality in multiple locations, necessitating substantial rehabilitation efforts.

State authorities have launched damage assessment operations and begun coordinating relief measures across affected districts. The scale of agricultural disruption has prompted calls for enhanced disaster management protocols and long-term support mechanisms for farming communities dependent on monsoon-season productivity.
