TACLOBAN CITY — The Department of Agriculture has launched an assessment of a notably large carabao in Northern Samar, with officials exploring its potential role in an expanded breeding and conservation program for the province. Assistant Secretary for Ruminant Livestock Benjamin Albarece led a DA technical mission to San Roque in Northern Samar on Tuesday to conduct an on-site inspection of the animal and evaluate its suitability for breeding purposes.
The initiative aims to leverage the carabao's exceptional size characteristics to strengthen livestock production across Northern Samar. The breed evaluation forms part of the DA's broader effort to enhance the quality and productivity of the region's carabao population, which remains a critical component of the agricultural sector.
Technical teams are assessing the animal's genetic traits and health status as part of the preliminary review process. Should the assessment prove favorable, the carabao could be incorporated into a structured breeding program designed to improve herd productivity and conservation of the species in the province.
