MANILA — The Department of Agriculture is moving forward with plans to approve at least four additional vaccines against African swine fever (ASF) through 2027, part of a broader strategy to combat the persistent disease and revive the Philippines' swine industry.
Agriculture Undersecretary for Livestock Constante Palabrica outlined the agency's vaccination roadmap during recent discussions on disease control measures. The accelerated approval timeline reflects the government's commitment to expanding the arsenal of tools available to Filipino farmers battling ASF, which has devastated hog production across the country.
The DA's push for multiple vaccine approvals comes as the agency works to rebuild domestic swine herds depleted by successive ASF outbreaks. Officials believe a diversified vaccine portfolio will give farmers greater flexibility in implementing disease prevention protocols and help restore confidence in local pork production.
The approvals are expected to complement existing vaccination efforts already underway in priority regions. Agricultural officials indicated that expanded vaccine availability could help reduce reliance on imported pork products and support economic recovery in farming communities.
