CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Agricultural officials in the Mimaropa region are intensifying efforts to help farmers prepare for potential crop losses as El Niño weather patterns threaten to create drought conditions across the Philippines.

The Department of Agriculture's Mimaropa office issued the advisory to farming communities in Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, and Romblon, recommending immediate adoption of water-saving techniques and improved soil management strategies. The measures are designed to help preserve harvests and maintain farm productivity during the anticipated dry season.

The warning aligns with forecasts from the Department of Science and Technology projecting that El Niño-induced drought could affect all provinces by March 2027. Agricultural experts have emphasized that proper water conservation and soil practices now could significantly reduce crop damage when drier conditions arrive.

Farmers in the affected provinces are being encouraged to assess current water resources, implement efficient irrigation methods, and adopt soil conservation techniques including mulching and proper composting. The DA has indicated it will provide technical assistance to help farmers implement these adaptive measures.
