Dak Lak launches campaign to combat illegal fishing practices

Dak Lak province has launched a comprehensive campaign to raise awareness among fishermen and coastal communities about the dangers and legal consequences of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing practices. The initiative comes as regional authorities move to strengthen enforcement and compliance with international maritime regulations.

During a recent conference, border guard officers outlined the province's 2026 regulatory framework and external information strategy aimed at combating IUU fishing. Officials also presented historical documentation and legal evidence reinforcing Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos.

The awareness drive forms part of broader regional efforts to tackle IUU fishing, which undermines sustainable marine resources and threatens food security across Southeast Asia. Dak Lak's push aligns with similar initiatives in other coastal provinces, including Tay Ninh's enhanced fishing fleet management protocols and efforts to address the ongoing 'yellow card' designation.

Authorities are encouraging fishermen to adopt responsible fishing methods and comply with established maritime laws. The campaign emphasizes the importance of understanding Vietnam's legal framework governing offshore activities and the nation's territorial claims in contested waters.
