The 2027 Dakar Rally will take place across Portugal and Morocco, organisers Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) announced on Friday. The event will begin with a prologue and opening stage in Portugal before moving to Morocco for the remainder of the competition.
The decision represents a significant shift in the rally's location strategy. Just five days prior, ASO announced that the event would not be held in Saudi Arabia, which had hosted the prestigious rally since 2020, citing security concerns as the primary reason for the change.
The Dakar Rally is one of the world's most challenging off-road racing events, attracting competitors from across the globe who tackle arduous terrain and extreme conditions. The competition has traditionally rotated between different countries and continents to test drivers' skills in varied environments.
The move to Portugal and Morocco marks a return to Europe and North Africa for the rally, regions with rich motorsporting heritage. ASO has not disclosed further details regarding the specific routes, stages, or competition dates for the 2027 edition.
