The Democratic Action Party has formally petitioned the Prime Minister to make public the minutes of meetings concerning the conditional pardon granted to former Prime Minister Najib Razak, party secretary-general Loke Siew Fook announced on Tuesday.
Loke said the DAP's request was transmitted to the Prime Minister's office as part of efforts to enhance governmental transparency on the contentious decision to grant Najib conditional clemency. However, he acknowledged that any declassification of the meeting records would ultimately require clearance from the Attorney General's office.
The conditional pardon, announced in August 2023, reduced Najib's 12-year prison sentence for criminal breach of trust to just six years. The decision sparked considerable public debate, with supporters viewing it as merciful while critics argued it undermined judicial accountability.
The opposition's push for disclosure comes amid broader calls from civil society groups and political parties for greater transparency regarding the rationale behind the executive decision. The government has not yet publicly responded to the DAP's declassification request.
