DAP lawmaker backs tax rebate plan for air purifier purchases

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — Opposition legislator Lim Guan Eng has proposed a fiscal incentive to help Malaysians purchase air purification equipment amid recurring transboundary haze episodes affecting the region.

The Democratic Action Party's Bagan Member of Parliament urged federal authorities to implement a RM1,000 tax rebate scheme for citizens acquiring air purifiers, framing the measure as a public health intervention during periods of degraded air quality.

The proposal comes as Malaysia continues to face seasonal air pollution challenges, with airborne particulate matter regularly exceeding safe exposure thresholds across multiple states. Lim's recommendation reflects growing concerns about the respiratory health impacts on the general population.

The tax incentive approach would reduce out-of-pocket expenditures for household air filtration systems, potentially increasing adoption rates among middle and lower-income households most vulnerable to air pollution exposure.
