DAP lawmaker defends transport minister's special plate scheme

The DAP politician reiterated that proceeds from the sale of premium vehicle registration plates are channelled towards assisting taxi and school bus drivers, responding to ongoing scrutiny of the programme championed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Lee's defence of the initiative comes as the scheme continues to draw mixed reactions from the public and opposition quarters. Supporters argue the revenue model provides targeted assistance to public transport operators who rely heavily on their vehicles for livelihood.

The special registration number system allows vehicle owners to purchase distinctive plates at premium prices, with the government directing a portion of these revenues to benefit the transport sector's workforce.

Loke's ministry has previously outlined plans to use the scheme to support driver welfare programmes and operational assistance for taxi and school bus operators facing economic pressures. The DAP lawmaker's comments underscore the coalition government's commitment to the initiative despite critics questioning its necessity and implementation.

The scheme remains part of broader efforts by the current administration to generate alternative revenue streams while addressing needs within Malaysia's transport industry.
