Dassault clears integration of Indian weapons on Rafale jets

Dassault Aviation has granted approval for Indian-manufactured weapons systems to be integrated onto Rafale fighter aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force, according to defence sources. The clearance represents a major milestone in India's efforts to leverage domestic defence production for its growing fleet of French-origin fighters.

The approval enables the Air Force to equip its Rafale squadrons with domestically-developed weapons and systems, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and bolstering the country's aerospace industrial ecosystem. The move aligns with the government's broader strategic push to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.

The development occurs against the backdrop of the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) procurement process, which seeks to add 114 new combat jets to the Air Force's inventory. Defence officials indicate the MRFA deal could be concluded by March 2027, contingent on finalising technical and commercial negotiations with prospective vendors.

The Indian Air Force has prioritised the integration of domestically-produced systems across its expanding fighter aircraft inventory, viewing such measures as critical to enhancing operational self-reliance and strengthening the country's defence industrial base. The latest approval from Dassault underscores the willingness of foreign original equipment manufacturers to collaborate with India's defence sector on localised production and integration initiatives.
