Data breach affects 110,000 members at insurance services provider

Alliance Medinet, a key service provider to Singapore's insurance sector, disclosed on Friday that a cyber incident had compromised the personal data of approximately 110,000 members. The company, which handles administrative and claims processing services for multiple insurers, said it had detected unauthorised access to its systems.

Three major insurance providers have confirmed being affected by the breach. HSBC Life, Singlife and Income Insurance—which rely on Alliance Medinet for customer servicing—have notified their respective policyholders of the incident. The insurers have urged affected individuals to monitor their accounts for suspicious activity.

While Alliance Medinet has not disclosed specific details about the nature of the compromised data, such breaches typically expose personal identifiers, contact information and potentially financial records. The company said it had engaged cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident and was working with relevant authorities.

The incident underscores ongoing security concerns in the region's financial services sector, where third-party service providers handle vast amounts of sensitive customer information. Regulators have increasingly focused on data protection standards across the industry in recent years.
