Data centre job growth lags investment levels, says HR minister
Malaysia's human resources minister has highlighted a mismatch between the scale of data centre investments and the number of jobs being created in the sector. The positions that have emerged tend to be high-value roles requiring specialised technical expertise, according to the minister's assessment.

The human resources ministry has raised concerns about the employment impact of Malaysia's growing data centre sector, noting that job creation has not kept pace with the level of capital investment flowing into the industry.
Minister Ramanan observed that while data centre projects have attracted significant investment, the employment multiplier effect has been modest. He attributed this disparity to the nature of the roles being generated within the sector.
The majority of positions created in data centre operations are high-value positions that demand specialised technical skills and expertise, the minister explained. This skills requirement has limited the breadth of employment opportunities across different educational and experience levels within the labour market.
The observation underscores a broader challenge for Malaysia's technology sector: balancing the attraction of capital-intensive industries with the need to create diverse employment opportunities that benefit a wider segment of the workforce. The data centre sector's reliance on specialist talent has implications for skills development and training priorities across the nation's educational institutions.
