DAVAO CITY — A milestone shipment of frozen whole steamed saba bananas departed the Philippines for Australia on September 22, representing the first commercial export of the specialty product to the country, the Department of Agriculture in the Davao Region (DA-11) announced Wednesday.
The consignment was processed through DA-11's Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD), which coordinated logistics and market entry requirements for the Cardava banana variety.
The development signals growing momentum for value-added agricultural exports from Mindanao's largest city. By transforming fresh saba bananas into frozen steamed products, local exporters are targeting premium market segments in Australia, where processed tropical fruits command higher margins than fresh produce.
DA-11 has positioned itself as a key facilitator for regional agricultural exporters seeking to access international markets. The agency's assistance with the saba banana shipment underscores the region's capacity to meet stringent food safety and quality standards required by developed markets.
