DBKL revamps public housing with RM446m makeover, ditches bright colours

The Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) has launched an extensive renovation programme targeting public housing schemes across the capital, with a budget allocation of RM446 million. The initiative marks a significant shift in the city's approach to residential aesthetics, phasing out the bright, multi-coloured paint schemes that previously characterised many housing blocks.

Officials have opted for a more subdued colour palette, replacing what were described as 'kindergarten colours' with neutral tones that align with contemporary urban design principles. The decision reflects changing preferences toward a more mature visual landscape across the city's residential areas.

Beyond cosmetic improvements, the renovation programme encompasses substantial safety upgrades and infrastructure enhancements across multiple housing estates. The comprehensive approach aims to address both aging infrastructure and structural concerns affecting residents in these schemes.

The facelift represents one of DBKL's largest residential improvement initiatives in recent years, signalling renewed investment in public housing maintenance and modernisation. Officials have not disclosed a specific timeline for completion of the full programme, though work is expected to proceed in phases across affected estates throughout the city.
