MANILA — Rep. Leila de Lima of the Mamamayang Liberal Party-list said the shutdown of Quezon City's Task Force Disiplina was warranted, citing the need to prevent authorities from adopting extrajudicial approaches to policing.

The task force was disbanded following the deaths of three teenagers, whose deaths were attributed to the unit's operations. De Lima said that no government agency should be permitted to function if it maintains what she characterized as a "Tokhang" mindset, a reference to the controversial drug war operations that have drawn international scrutiny.

In a statement released Friday, the lawmaker emphasized that individuals who disregard proper legal procedures and accountability measures should not be entrusted with state authority. De Lima's remarks underscore ongoing concerns among critics about the conduct of specialized police units and their adherence to constitutional protections.

The incident highlights renewed tensions over police conduct and accountability mechanisms in the Philippines, with advocates arguing for stricter oversight of task forces operating in urban centers.
