Sri Lanka's Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva announced his resignation from the position on Wednesday, bringing an end to his tenure leading the national side in the longest format of the game.
In a letter addressed to the Selection Committee, de Silva stated that he believes the time has come for younger players to assume the captaincy. "It's my genuine opinion that the mantle should go down to the next generation," he said in his formal notification of stepping down.
Despite relinquishing the captaincy, de Silva has signalled his continued commitment to Sri Lankan cricket. The middle-order batter confirmed his availability to represent the national team in future Test matches as a player, ensuring that his departure from the leadership role does not mark an exit from international cricket.
The resignation opens the door for the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee to identify and appoint a successor to lead the Test team in what promises to be a transitional period for the squad.
