Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla have filed appeals before the Allahabad High Court against capital punishment awarded in connection with the death of Saurabh Rajput, a case that drew widespread attention for its unusual circumstances.
A trial court had pronounced them guilty on September 30 for the murder of Rajput, who was the husband of Rastogi. The court had also convicted both accused for their alleged attempt to hide the victim's body, leading to the case acquiring the moniker 'blue drum' murder in local media.
The convictions marked the conclusion of the trial phase in what had become one of the region's more closely followed criminal cases. The death sentences have now been placed before the high court for judicial review, a standard appellate process in Indian capital punishment cases.
Details regarding the specific grounds on which the appeals have been filed remain to be disclosed. The Allahabad High Court will examine the evidence and legal arguments presented by both the defence and the prosecution before determining the outcome of the challenge.
