Death toll from Nepal flash floods surges to 469 as rescue efforts continue

Nepal Police confirmed Friday that 469 people have died in flash floods affecting eight districts across central Nepal, with recovery operations ongoing in the aftermath of the disaster. The avalanche of ice and rock, caused by a glacial collapse in the high Himalayan region, unleashed devastating floodwaters that swept through populated areas across the region.

The highest casualty counts have been reported in Chitwan district with 178 deaths, followed by Nawalparasi East with 110 fatalities. Other significantly affected areas include Gorkha (44 deaths), Nuwakot (37), Dhading (33), Tanahu (28), Nawalparasi West (27), and Rasuwa (12), according to police statements.

Rescue and relief operations have intensified across the disaster zone, with 7,451 security personnel mobilized for search and rescue efforts. This includes 2,391 personnel from the Nepal Army, who have been working to locate survivors and recover bodies from affected regions. So far, 1,545 injured and stranded people have been rescued from various locations, with 84 currently receiving treatment at hospitals in Kathmandu.

Authorities have warned that the death toll may rise further as search operations continue in remote and difficult-to-access areas affected by the floods. Damage assessments are ongoing as rescue teams work to reach isolated communities in the mountainous terrain.
