Death toll reaches 43 as monsoon and cyclones batter Philippines
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported Sunday that severe weather systems including the southwest monsoon and four cyclones have claimed at least 43 lives across the country. The majority of fatalities occurred in Benguet province, where landslides triggered by heavy rainfall proved particularly deadly.

MANILA — The combined impact of the southwest monsoon and cyclones Luis, Maymay, Neneng, and Pilandok has resulted in at least 43 confirmed deaths, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
The NDRRMC documented the fatality count in its latest situational report issued Sunday. Benguet province recorded the highest number of deaths, primarily from landslide incidents triggered by intense rainfall associated with the weather systems.
The southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, combined with the successive cyclone passages created hazardous conditions across multiple regions. Mountainous areas, particularly in the Cordillera region where Benguet is located, proved especially vulnerable to ground instability and slope failures.
The NDRRMC continued to monitor weather developments and coordinate response operations across affected areas. Authorities urged residents in high-risk zones to remain vigilant and heed evacuation orders as the weather systems continued their impact on the archipelago.
