Dedicated educator preserves Khmer language in Vietnam's border regions

Thach Thi Phat Ca Di, 32, has become a vital custodian of Khmer linguistic heritage in Tay Ninh Province's sparsely populated border areas. Her nearly ten-year commitment to teaching the language comes at a time when few educators remain qualified to pass on this knowledge to younger generations.

Working in one of Vietnam's most remote regions, Thach stands as one of only three Khmer language teachers remaining in her province. The scarcity of instructors reflects broader challenges facing minority language preservation across Southeast Asia, where economic migration and urbanization have reduced demand for traditional linguistic skills.
