Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated five expansion projects in West Bengal on Wednesday, marking a significant step in India's domestic defence production infrastructure. The foundation-laying ceremony involved Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India, both key players in the country's defence and maritime sectors.
The five projects are collectively valued at approximately ₹3,500 crore and are designed to enhance manufacturing capacity and technological capabilities across both organisations. The expansion initiatives form part of the government's broader strategy to strengthen India's self-reliance in defence production and reduce dependence on imports.
GRSE, a public sector shipbuilder headquartered in Kolkata, specialises in constructing naval vessels and offshore support vessels. Yantra India, operating in the defence manufacturing space, contributes to the government's Make in India vision. The West Bengal-based projects underscore the Centre's commitment to developing regional industrial hubs for advanced defence manufacturing.
The expansion projects are expected to generate employment opportunities and establish West Bengal as a crucial node in India's defence manufacturing ecosystem. Officials indicated that the initiatives align with the government's focus on enhancing domestic production capacity across critical defence sectors, including shipbuilding and advanced weaponry systems.
