Defence Ministry narrows missile choice for new littoral combat ships

The Defence Ministry has advanced to the final selection stage for surface-to-surface missiles intended for Malaysia's new Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), according to ministry officials. The shortlisting of three candidate systems represents a significant milestone in equipping the vessels, which form a cornerstone of the country's maritime defence modernisation programme.

The three shortlisted missile platforms are currently undergoing detailed evaluation to determine which system best meets the operational requirements and technical specifications for the LCS platform. The selection process considers factors including system compatibility, operational range, reliability, and overall cost-effectiveness within defence procurement parameters.

The LCS programme, managed by the Defence Ministry, seeks to enhance Malaysia's coastal and territorial waters security capabilities. The vessels are designed to support maritime patrol, surveillance, and protection operations across the nation's extensive maritime zones. Integration of advanced missile systems is viewed as critical to delivering the combat effectiveness the Navy requires for modern naval operations.

The final decision on the missile system is expected to be announced following completion of the technical and financial evaluation phase. Once selected, the chosen platform will be integrated into the LCS design specifications and production schedule, advancing Malaysia's naval capability modernisation initiative.
