Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh Given One-Year Extension

The Union Government has granted Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh a one-year extension, reinforcing continuity in India's defence establishment at a time of strategic significance in the region. The extension underscores the Centre's confidence in Singh's leadership amid evolving security challenges.

Since May 31, 2024, Singh has held the dual portfolio of Secretary in the Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in addition to his primary role as Defence Secretary. This consolidated charge places him at the helm of critical defence policy formulation and research initiatives.

The extension is expected to ensure stability in defence administration during a period when India continues to modernise its armed forces and strengthen its research capabilities. Singh's expanded responsibilities span policy direction, defence operations oversight, and technological advancement through DRDO's initiatives.

The move reflects the government's emphasis on maintaining experienced leadership in defence matters, particularly as defence procurement and indigenous research remain priority areas for the Modi administration.
