The Chief of Defence Staff announced a two-year service extension for Agniveers on Tuesday, addressing concerns about a large-scale exit of personnel from India's armed forces. The decision affects more than 18,300 Agniveers who were scheduled to complete their initial four-year engagement period by December 31, 2024.
Under the Agnipath scheme, launched in 2022, Agniveers are recruited for a fixed four-year tenure with the possibility of permanent commission for select candidates. The scheme has been touted as a cost-effective modernization measure to create a younger, more agile military force while reducing pension burdens.
The two-year extension will allow Agniveers to accumulate additional service credit and provides them with improved career prospects within the defence establishment. Officials indicated that the decision aims to retain operational experience gained during initial service periods while managing workforce transitions more smoothly.
The announcement is expected to ease concerns among the first batch of Agniveers, who have completed substantial service in their respective commands. Defence Ministry sources indicated that the extension can be availed by eligible personnel subject to performance evaluations and organizational requirements.
The decision reflects ongoing calibration of the Agnipath framework, which has drawn both support from defence planners and scrutiny from veterans' groups since its inception.
