Defending US Open champions Sabalenka, Alcaraz advance to quarterfinals

Sabalenka overcame early service struggles to defeat American Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Townsend broke Sabalenka's serve three times in the opening four games, threatening a major upset before the world number one regained her composure and reasserted control.

After falling behind 3-1 in the second set, Sabalenka did not drop another point, extending her winning run to close out the match decisively. "I love matches like that because it was really challenging," Sabalenka said. "Going through tough challenges and overcoming those challenges is what I enjoy."

Alcaraz followed suit in the second match on Arthur Ashe, dispatching American Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. The defending champion displayed his characteristic attacking game throughout, successfully executing his preferred style against a talented opponent. "I played my game. I tried to play my style," Alcaraz said. "Tommy's such a talented player. His shots are pretty dangerous, and sometimes it's difficult to control the ball when it comes to you, so I just tried to be ready."

Both champions' progression sets up intriguing quarterfinal matchups as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
