Defunct Kentucky golf course transformed into sprawling public park

A Kentucky county has repurposed a defunct golf course into an expansive public park following the property's closure due to declining rounds and weak visitor numbers. The Fox Run Golf Course, spanning 225 acres, had averaged between 9,000 and 10,000 rounds annually—a volume insufficient to sustain operations.

The transformation represents a shift in how underutilised recreational properties are being leveraged to benefit wider communities. Rather than remaining dormant, the former course is being developed into a multifaceted park designed to serve diverse recreational interests and age groups.

The reimagined facility will incorporate hiking and walking trails, mountain biking routes, rock climbing areas, water features and family-friendly spaces. The design prioritises environmental stewardship, with approximately 70 per cent of the total acreage designated to remain as natural greenspace. This preservation approach balances recreational development with ecological conservation.

The project reflects broader trends across North America where underperforming golf courses are being adapted for alternative public uses, addressing changing recreational preferences and demographic shifts that have affected the golf industry. The Kentucky development offers a model for converting dormant properties into assets that serve broader community recreational and environmental objectives.
