Dehiwala businessman receives death sentence for heroin trafficking

A businessman from the Dehiwala area has been sentenced to capital punishment by the Chilaw High Court for his involvement in large-scale heroin trafficking. The court delivered its verdict on September 17 after finding the accused guilty of possession with intent to distribute the controlled substance.
The conviction stems from a targeted raid conducted by officers from the Chilaw Divisional Intelligence Unit in the Anavilundawa area. Acting on intelligence, the narcotics team arrested the suspect and recovered heroin in his possession, leading to charges being filed against him.
The case was prosecuted following standard procedures, with the accused produced before the Chilaw High Court where evidence was heard and examined. The court found sufficient grounds to establish guilt on trafficking charges, resulting in the death sentence.
The sentencing reflects the country's strict stance against large-scale drug trafficking operations. Sri Lankan courts have consistently imposed severe penalties on those convicted of trafficking controlled substances, particularly heroin, which remains a significant concern for law enforcement authorities across the region.
