Delhi air quality body cites 17 road dust, construction waste violations

Inspection teams deployed by the CAQM found 17 instances of non-compliance with dust control and construction waste management regulations across the Inner and Outer Ring Road corridors in the national capital. The violations, spread across 25 distinct locations, indicate gaps in the enforcement of environmental standards designed to curb particulate matter pollution on major thoroughfares.

The findings underscore persistent challenges in managing road dust and construction and demolition waste—key contributors to Delhi's poor air quality, particularly during winter months when atmospheric conditions trap pollutants. Visible accumulation of such materials on roadways violates the CAQM's strict guidelines aimed at preventing fugitive dust emissions into the air.

The CAQM has authority to impose penalties and mandate corrective action on violators, which typically include municipal authorities, road contractors, and construction site operators. The inspections represent ongoing monitoring efforts by the air quality commission to ensure compliance with dust suppression measures including street sweeping, water sprinkling, and proper waste segregation.

The violations highlight the need for stronger coordination between municipal corporations, traffic authorities, and construction agencies to implement and sustain anti-dust protocols on major roads. As Delhi prepares for the winter season—traditionally marked by spike in pollution levels—such enforcement actions form part of broader measures to improve air quality in the city.
