Delhi air quality remains hazardous; Stage 3 curbs persist ahead of festival

Delhi continued to grapple with severe air pollution Saturday, with the Air Quality Index hovering at 364 at 9:30 am, well within the 'very poor' category. At least three air quality monitoring stations across the capital recorded readings in the severe range, underscoring the persistence of hazardous conditions.

The Commission for Air Quality Management invoked Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan on Friday, introducing curbs on vehicular movement, construction activities, and industrial operations. The decision came as the national capital braced for Diwali celebrations, traditionally associated with elevated pollution levels from firecrackers and increased atmospheric stagnation.

Under Stage 3 restrictions, odd-even vehicle rationing schemes remain a potential measure, while non-essential construction and demolition activities are barred. Schools have shifted to online classes for younger students, and residents have been advised to limit outdoor exposure.

The pollution spike reflects a combination of factors including vehicular emissions, industrial discharge, and meteorological conditions that trap pollutants near ground level during winter months. Authorities have urged residents to use air purifiers and masks while monitoring AQI updates for further advisories.
