Delhi border emissions checks snarl traffic across satellite cities
Intensified vehicle inspections at Delhi's interstate boundaries to enforce pollution control standards have triggered severe traffic congestion across major entry points. Commuters faced hours-long delays as enforcement teams screened vehicles for compliance with emission norms at multiple border crossings.

Traffic came to a standstill Monday at several key entry points connecting Delhi with neighbouring states as authorities stepped up checks to ensure vehicles meet prescribed emission standards. The drive affected major corridors including Delhi-Gurugram, Delhi-Noida, Delhi-Ghaziabad, Delhi-Sonipat and Delhi-Najafgarh borders, with enforcement teams from the Transport Department and traffic police conducting compliance inspections.
The Delhi-Gurugram border experienced the most severe congestion, with vehicles backed up for several kilometres along National Highway-48 near the Sirhaul toll plaza. Traffic jams extended across both the main carriageway and service roads, creating bottlenecks that rippled through rush-hour commute patterns. Similar delays were observed at entry points near Noida and Ghaziabad, where long queues formed as authorities systematically checked vehicles.
The increased enforcement reflects intensified efforts to maintain air quality standards in the national capital region through vehicle emission restrictions. While such checks are designed to keep only compliant vehicles on Delhi roads, the concentration of inspections during peak commute hours has significantly disrupted transportation networks serving the broader metropolitan area.
Commuters expressed frustration at the extended delays, with many stranded for extended periods during the traffic checks. The congestion underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing environmental compliance efforts with traffic management at the capital's borders.
