Delhi bus drivers extend strike into fifth day over pay demands

The majority of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses remained off the roads on Saturday as drivers continued their protest over daily wage hikes, enhanced medical facilities, and overtime compensation. The strike, now in its fifth day, has persisted despite repeated assurances from the Delhi government that their demands would be addressed.

To mitigate the service disruptions, DTC management directed permanent drivers to operate additional vehicles and fill staffing gaps. However, the measure has had limited impact given the scale of the strike. A significant fleet of electric buses operated by private concessionaires has helped partially maintain services, though a large number of conventional buses remain idle.

Striking drivers alleged that some colleagues faced administrative pressure to continue working despite the protest action. Incidents of vandalism were also reported, with drivers claiming that a bus window was damaged at the Bawana depot during the industrial action.

Drivers expressed skepticism about management's response to the workforce shortage, noting that the number of protesting employees far exceeds the capacity of permanent staff to cover operations. "Most of us remain on strike," representatives stated, indicating the action's continued strength despite government intervention efforts.
