Delhi's air quality deteriorated sharply on Wednesday morning, with the city-wide AQI climbing to 373, placing it firmly in the 'very poor' category and posing significant health risks to residents. The pollution crisis extended well into the National Capital Region, with satellite cities reporting equally alarming levels.
Punjabi Bagh recorded the worst readings in the city at 452, followed closely by Jahangirpuri at 450. Other areas across the NCR, including Gurugram and Noida, also reported 'very poor' air quality conditions, indicating a widespread pollution episode affecting the broader metropolitan area.
The severe air quality follows the pattern typical of Delhi's winter months, when meteorological conditions trap pollutants near the ground, compounding emissions from vehicular traffic, industrial sources, and stubble burning in neighbouring states. Health authorities have typically advised residents, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, to limit outdoor activities during such episodes.
The persistent air quality challenges underscore the ongoing struggle faced by the region in managing urban pollution, despite various government interventions and restrictions implemented during the winter season.
