The Shree Keshav Ram Leela Committee, which organises Delhi's annual Ramlila celebration in Pitampura, has clarified the intent behind a controversial cockroach effigy featured in this year's performance. A Chief Justice official expressed gratitude towards the organisers, characterising the incident as providing unexpected public attention to their efforts.
The committee stated that the cockroach effigy serves a symbolic purpose, representing filth and dirt rather than targeting any individual or group. The use of such imagery aligns with the broader messaging of the Swachh Bharat and Swachh Delhi cleanliness campaigns, organisers said, emphasising the educational and social awareness components of the traditional theatrical performance.
The Ramlila, a centuries-old dramatic retelling of Hindu epic narratives, has traditionally served as a vehicle for social messaging alongside its religious and cultural significance. The committee's explanation indicates that the cockroach symbolism was intended to resonate with audiences on public health and sanitation themes.
The incident highlights how traditional cultural events continue to engage with contemporary civic campaigns in India, blending religious narrative with modern governance initiatives focused on urban cleanliness and public health awareness.
