Delhi CM orders probe into Old Delhi building collapse that kills two

A three-storey building under construction collapsed in Gali Sitara near Chawri Bazar Metro station in Old Delhi on Thursday morning, leaving two dead and four injured. The structure came down around 9:50 am, triggering a rescue operation by the Delhi Fire Services, which recovered two bodies from the rubble. Four other injured individuals were transported to hospital by local residents before firefighting teams arrived at the scene.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced immediate action following the incident, directing authorities to register an FIR against the contractor responsible for the construction project. She also ordered the suspension of the junior engineer and assistant engineer assigned to oversee the site, citing their role in the structural failure.

The Chief Minister instructed officials to provide the best available medical care to those injured and assured immediate ex-gratia assistance to the families affected by the tragedy. "Stringent action will be taken against those found responsible, in accordance with the law," she said in a statement.

The collapse marks another incident highlighting concerns over construction safety standards and regulatory oversight in Delhi's older commercial areas. Authorities have launched a comprehensive inquiry to determine the structural and procedural failures that led to the building's collapse.
