Delhi counterfeit rabies vaccine bust uncovers Kanpur manufacturing ring

A counterfeit rabies vaccine syndicate operating across northern India has been partially dismantled following the interception of fake injections at Delhi's Bhagirathi Palace, authorities said. The discovery triggered a multi-state investigation that has now focused on two pharmaceutical companies based in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Foreign Intelligenc Reports (FIR) have been registered against New RJ and Alexer Cure, both Kanpur-based firms suspected of manufacturing and distributing the counterfeit vaccines. During raids on their premises, enforcement officials seized approximately 592 counterfeit rabies vaccine doses and sealed the storage facilities where the spurious medications were being kept.

The recovery of fake rabies vaccines represents a serious public health risk, given the vaccine's critical importance in post-exposure prophylaxis following animal bites. Authorities are investigating the supply chain to determine how many counterfeit doses may have reached patients across the region.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about the circulation of spurious pharmaceuticals in India despite regulatory oversight. Investigators are working to identify retail outlets and medical facilities that may have distributed these dangerous counterfeit vaccines to unsuspecting patients. Further arrests are expected as the investigation progresses.
