Delhi deploys AI system to fast-track emergency vehicle response
The capital's new Intelligent Traffic Management System will automatically clear traffic signals for ambulances and emergency vehicles, aiming to reduce response times across the city.

Delhi is rolling out an artificial intelligence-powered traffic management infrastructure designed to prioritize emergency vehicles and reduce critical response times. The Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) will enable traffic signals to automatically create unobstructed pathways—or "green corridors"—for ambulances and other emergency vehicles navigating the city's congested roads.
The system represents a significant advancement in how India's capital manages one of its most persistent urban challenges: traffic congestion that frequently delays emergency medical services. By integrating AI algorithms with existing traffic signal infrastructure, the ITMS can detect approaching emergency vehicles and dynamically adjust signal timing to facilitate faster passage through intersections.
The technology is expected to benefit not only ambulances but also fire brigade vehicles and police emergency units. Faster response times could prove critical in medical emergencies, where minutes often determine patient outcomes. The system's deployment across Delhi's traffic network underscores the city's broader push toward smart city solutions that leverage technology to improve urban services.
Authorities have positioned the ITMS as part of Delhi's larger infrastructure modernization strategy. The system's rollout is expected to be phased, with initial implementation focusing on major arterial roads and high-traffic zones where emergency response delays have been most pronounced.
