Delhi deploys security forces as opposition plans Supreme Court march

Delhi entered its third consecutive day of heightened security on Monday as opposition parties prepared to march to the Supreme Court in escalating protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The coordinated show of force saw police and paramilitary units positioned across the capital, with authorities citing concerns over potential disruptions to public order. Weekend agitations had resulted in the detention of thousands of demonstrators, including leaders from various opposition parties and former state chief ministers.

The opposition coalition announced its plans on October 11 to stage the Supreme Court march, framing the action as part of broader demands for electoral integrity and the removal of the election commissioner from office. The protesters have leveled allegations of procedural irregularities in the electoral process, with organisers positioning the demonstration as a decisive moment in their campaign.

Transport infrastructure across the city has been reconfigured to accommodate security operations. Delhi Metro authorities announced that entry and exit gates at six stations would remain closed until 4 pm, effectively restricting public movement through key transit hubs. Security checkpoints have been intensified at the city's borders, railway terminals, and bus stations, with police conducting enhanced vehicle screening to prevent unauthorised gatherings and maintain order.

Delhi Police officials indicated that the security posture reflects a comprehensive approach to managing large-scale public assemblies. The deployment aims to balance citizens' constitutional right to protest with the state's responsibility to maintain public safety and prevent potential law and order breaches during the demonstration.
