Delhi deploys smart traffic system to combat theft, congestion

Delhi is rolling out an advanced Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) designed to modernize the city's approach to law enforcement and congestion management. The network of more than 2,500 strategically positioned cameras will feed real-time data to traffic authorities, enabling rapid response to multiple urban challenges.

The system's core functionality includes automated alerts for stolen vehicles, allowing police to identify and intercept flagged automobiles across the city's road network. Beyond vehicle tracking, the ITMS will monitor traffic flow patterns, identifying congestion-prone areas and slow-moving stretches to help authorities optimize traffic signal timing and deploy resources efficiently.

Accident detection represents another critical component of the initiative. The camera network will flag collision incidents as they occur, enabling faster emergency response and reducing secondary accidents caused by congestion. This capability is expected to improve emergency services' ability to reach incident sites promptly.

The system underscores Delhi's investment in smart city infrastructure to address persistent urban challenges. By centralizing traffic data collection and analysis, authorities hope to reduce vehicle theft, cut commute times, and enhance overall road safety across the metropolitan region. The ITMS is part of broader efforts to modernize Delhi's transportation infrastructure and improve citizen services.
