Delhi designates 81 artificial ponds for Ganesh idol immersion

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) issued new guidelines on September 9 restricting idol immersion in the Yamuna and other natural water bodies across the city. The move aims to prevent environmental degradation and water contamination during the annual Ganesh Visarjan festival.

Authorised immersion sites have been established at 81 artificial ponds spread across Delhi's various districts. The designated locations are intended to provide devotees with convenient alternatives while ensuring strict compliance with environmental protection standards. These facilities will allow the ritual to proceed while maintaining water quality and ecological balance.

The restrictions mark part of ongoing efforts by Delhi's environmental authorities to balance religious observances with conservation requirements. Similar measures have been implemented during previous festivals to minimise pollution in the capital's water systems. Residents and temple organisers have been advised to utilise only the officially designated artificial ponds for the immersion ceremony.

The DPCC's initiative reflects growing emphasis on sustainable religious practices across major Indian cities. State pollution control boards in other regions have similarly introduced alternative immersion methods to protect water bodies from festival-related contamination.
