Delhi doubles parking fees, mandates remote work to fight pollution

Delhi doubles parking fees, mandates remote work to fight pollution

Delhi authorities have implemented a two-pronged strategy to tackle the city's persistent air pollution crisis by doubling parking fees across commercial zones and directing businesses to enforce remote work policies for 50 percent of their staff. The measures, which took effect following government notification, represent an attempt to discourage private vehicle use and reduce congestion-related emissions in one of Asia's most polluted capitals.

The parking fee increase applies to commercial establishments and public parking areas, with officials citing the need to make vehicle ownership costlier as a deterrent to unnecessary travel. Simultaneously, government and private offices have been instructed to enable work-from-home arrangements to cut down the number of commuters on city roads during peak hours.

Delhi's air quality typically deteriorates sharply between October and February, with vehicle emissions accounting for a significant portion of the region's particulate matter pollution. The city has experimented with various interventions in recent years, including odd-even vehicle rationing schemes and construction bans during pollution peaks.

Authorities have indicated that the measures will remain in place through the winter months when meteorological conditions trap pollutants near ground level. Officials plan to review the effectiveness of the new policies in reducing traffic volumes and air quality improvements in coming weeks.
