Delhi's environmental enforcement drive commenced with aggressive checks across city borders as authorities implemented the Winter Action Plan to combat seasonal air quality deterioration. On the first day of operations, officials screened nearly 15,000 vehicles and turned back 1,539 that failed to meet emission standards, while imposing penalties and environmental compensation charges totalling Rs 68.4 lakh.
The border-based vehicle checks form a critical component of Delhi's multi-pronged winter strategy, targeting polluting commercial vehicles and those with expired emission certificates. Authorities focused on intercepting heavy-duty vehicles and commercial transport that typically contribute significantly to the capital's pollution load during winter months when meteorological conditions trap pollutants closer to the ground.
The enforcement action reflects Delhi's intensified approach to curbing air quality deterioration, which typically peaks between October and February. The Winter Action Plan combines vehicle restrictions, construction regulations, and industrial emission controls to mitigate the seasonal spike in air pollution that has made Delhi one of the world's most polluted cities.
The traffic enforcement measures are expected to continue throughout the winter season, with authorities maintaining checkpoints at key entry points. Officials have signalled that violators can expect stringent penalties including fines and vehicle impoundment in cases of serious non-compliance with emission norms.
