Delhi enforces tighter pollution curbs as air quality deteriorates sharply
The national capital has activated Stage 1 of its Graded Response Action Plan, imposing stricter measures on dust emissions, fuel use in commercial kitchens, and diesel generator operations as air quality indices reach hazardous levels.

Delhi has initiated Stage 1 restrictions under its Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in response to worsening air quality across the region. The enforcement marks an escalation in pollution-control measures as meteorological conditions and seasonal factors combine to trap pollutants near ground level.
Under the Stage 1 protocol, authorities have mandated enhanced dust control measures at construction and demolition sites, requiring contractors to implement water sprinkling and containment procedures. The restrictions also target commercial establishments, particularly restaurants and food outlets, which are now prohibited from using coal and firewood in tandoors and other cooking apparatus.
Diesel generator usage has been curtailed as part of the action plan, with non-essential diesel-powered backup systems facing operational limits. The restrictions aim to reduce particulate matter and harmful emissions from multiple sources simultaneously.
Stage 1 represents the first tier of a four-stage response mechanism that progressively tightens regulations as air quality deteriorates further. Environmental experts emphasize that such measures, while necessary, require sustained coordination between municipal authorities, industrial operators, and residents to achieve meaningful improvements in air quality during the critical winter months.
